Anya Looking After a Friends Dog
Anya loves dogs and asked if she could look after a friends dog whilst we were on holiday. Although we have lots of animals (cats, chickens, ferrets and fish), caring for a dog required more time than our other pets. She really took her responsibility seriously and walked the dog twice a day including cleaning the mess, fed the dog and slept with him on her bed every night. She really enjoyed the experience but decided she didn't want her own dog as they needed more time and were less independent than her cats.

Chicken Feed Receipe to Produce Omega-3 Fatty Acids
I have been researching a diet that will help my chicken produce Columbus Eggs which are high in Omega 3 fatty Acids.
You can increase the level of omega-3 fatty acids in the eggs that your hens lay by including flaxseed in their feed. The flaxseed contains a type of omega-3 fatty acid called a -linolenic acid and the hen will deposit a significant amount of this dietary fatty acid into the egg yolk. The hen will also convert some of the a -linolenic acid into smaller amounts of other forms of omega-3 fatty acids and deposit them into the egg yolk.
Here is my current mix:
Wheat 4 Parts
Oats/Barley 2 Parts
Lentils/Split Peas/Quinoa 2 Parts
Flaxseed/Sunflower/Sesame Seeds 2 parts
Free choice of Oyster Shells/Grit
More information on Omega chicken diets can be found at http://www.gov.mb.ca/agriculture/livestock/poultry/bba01s04.html

Our Chickens
I can see the attraction in keeping chickens as a pet, with the benefit of some eggs as well. They may not be as trainable as a dog but they are appealing creatures with their gentle clucking. We have four Sussex hens. They are 10 weeks old so won't start laying eggs for at east 2 months. Their names are Chickpea, Brussel Sprout, Angry Bird and Strummer Keet.

Ferrets, Pets & Home Education
Our lovely pet ferret Red died in June. Red's death was tough for both kids as they had a special relationship with him. We explained what death meant in different cultures but Owen is a non-theist so found it hard to deal with the literal end of Red's life. However, we have two young crazy, bitey ferrets called Foxy and Freddie. The kids are building new bonds with them but have to be extra careful of their fingers!
